Gowns & Other Fashion Items
Things to note:
- Keep in mind that you can purchase perfectly good gowns, veils, shoes, etc., on
Ebay. My best friend bought her entire ensemble on ebay for a total of $60
(shoes, dress, wrap, accessories) and she looked like Marilyn Monroe
when she sang Happy Birthday to President Kennedy.
- Remember that anything marked "wedding" or "bridal" is going to cost about 500%
more than anything else. So if you are having a less formal wedding,
try looking elsewhere (OTHER than in bridal stores) for your
gown, shoes, and accessories. You can find perfectly lovely white shoes
at an end of season sale for 50% off at a regular shoe store and and
save on the overpriced fake satin dyed shoes from a bridal store that
cost a ridiculous amount of money.
- Wise Shopper of the Year Story from Yours Truly: I wore a bronze spaghetti strap dress with a lace, beaded, sequined skirt
from Lane Bryant when I got married in February of 2006. Of course it wasn't my first marriage. The dress was just
stunning. The original price, which was still a bargain, was $129. I paid -- Are you ready? -- $30.00 for it. It was
new, reducted 80% from $130, and we stumbled on it by accident.
- We also paid only $15.00 for a David's Bridals dress for my daughter. It was in
pristine condition. Thrift store. You really have to look, but those deals are out there!
Here are some other ideas for gowns -- bridal, bridesmaid, mother of the bride or groom. Some of them are rather unexpected, but great finds!
- JCrew Has some terrific dresses. I found this simple, white bridesmaid's dress for $199. Great for a bride. Some of them are as low as %99.
- Target! Carries a small line of beautiful, elegant bridal gowns, designed by Isaac Mizrahi, and unbelievably priced. Online only.
- Talbot Some really beautiful gowns and formal dresses at fantastic prices.
- Chadwicks Has a great collection of bridal gowns and formal occasions dresses, and the prices are unbeatable.
- Nordstrom Carries a beautiful line of formal gowns and dresses, as well as a bridal department. They are of excellent quality and are very, VERY reasonably priced!
- Lane Bryant (Plus Sizes) Has a Bridal Departement online only. They have a very small selection of
gowns, but, of course, as you would expect from LB, they are perfectly suited for our body shapes - very simple, elegant lines. And the prices are fantastic.
- Sydney's Closet. Lovely gowns (everything, actually) in plus or womens sizes, 14-44. Reasonably priced, too. (Includes Bridal, Maids, "Prom" and "Special Occasion" dresses. Lots of great choices in every price range.) Worth a look!
- JC Penney has a nice selection lovely for a bride or a bridesmaid. Also has a bridal
department. Not shabby, also, not too expensive. Mother-of-Bride, Mother-of-Groom, too.
- Buget Fashionista's '27 Bridesmaids Dresses for under $100. totally worth looking into.
These are from Penney's Special Occassion Collection Online Catalogue. Perfect for each other, no? Throw in some flowers, a couple of
rings, a bottle of champagne, OH, and a groom, and you've got a wedding.
$119.99
$119.99
These are in the Special Occasion Collection, and later I also found them in the Bridal Collection.
JC Penney has some integrity, as you know. They are a fantastic company, they have quality stuff, and their prices are not outrageous. What do you think, though? Isn't that cute, for a bride and her bridesmaid? Check the
shoes! They are on the same page, and only $29.99! Here's another:
(I think this is perfect for a Second Time Bride.)
$99.99 to $109.99
Isn't that a pretty? Especially if this
isn't your first wedding, or your getting married in a casual setting.
I think it's quite lovely.
Here are some MOB and MOG dress (or even bride's dresses, if you like the unconventional):
$99.99 to $109.99 Red or Black.
$99.99 to $109.99

$99.99 to $109.99
(Pants) $99.99 to $109.99
And that's just from a 15 minute shopping trip in the Special Occasion Department. Check them out, and visit the JC Penney Bridal Catalogue. It's worth it.
Just shop around! There is no reason for you or
your bridesmaids to pay a fortune for something if: a) you can't
afford it, b) you
will only use it once, c) why would you want to spend money on this
when you can spend it on your honeymoon or be saving for a house
instead?
Bridal Mart In
North Carolina.
These guys have been around for a long time. They have a pretty good
rep from what I hear, however, prices are pretty good. (I was going to
take a group of brides on a drive last year, but it didn't pan out. Is
it
worth the drive for you?)
Bridal Online Store
It's a nice site; prices are pretty good. Just use caution.
